The two men, identified as Mohammed Shafi Mojan (34), a resident of Kalbadevi; and Arman Saifie alias Allauddin (28), were arrested from the footpath outside the Geeta Bhavan Hotel on Princess Street on Monday after the police received a tip that two men planned to sell weapons there. According to the police officers, Allauddin who is from Uttar Pradesh, used to get pistols from there and sell them in the city through the middle man Mojan.

Officers investigating the case said that the two men did not have any permits or licences for the weapons, based on which they were arrested. “We now suspect that Allauddin and Mojan might have supplied or sold to gangs operating in Mumbai and nearby areas, and would also be affiliated with these gangs or gangsters involved in major crimes,” said Dyneshwar Chavan, deputy commissioner of police (zone 2). The police officers are now trying to identify the duo’s prospective customers who were planning to purchase the weapons.

The police have arrested the two men under section 3 and 25 of the Arms Act following which they were presented before the court and later remanded to police custody.
