MUMBAI: Despite The fact that the entire city is marred by pothole-ridden roads and hard-pressed for parking space, 4,000 new vehicles were registered across all the four regional transport offices (RTOs) — Tardeo, Andheri, Wadala and Borivli — in Mumbai on the eve of Dussehra.

As per data provided by the RTO offices, the highest number registrations for new vehicles was done at the Borivli RTO — having jurisdiction between Goregaon to Dahisar. About 1,161 two-wheelers and 784 cars were registered at the RTO.
Numbers for the Andheri RTO, which came in second, stood at 784 two-wheelers and 578 cars. About 799 two-wheelers and 300 cars were registered at the Wadala RTO (entire Eastern suburbs). The least number of registrations were done at the Tardeo RTO — 311 two-wheelers and 156 cars.
Owing to the high number of vehicle registration before the auspicious occasion of Dussehra, the RTOs collectively added more than Rs3 crore to their coffers.
But the numbers have seen a drop in comparison to the previous year. “There has been a 10 per cent drop in vehicle registration in comparison to 2015,” said an officer from the Tardeo RTO .
Among the many reasons suggested for this dip, several RTO officials claimed that the non-implementation of the 7th Pay Commission and slowdown in the market could be the primary reasons for this drop.
Meanwhile, the transport commissioner office has directed all the RTOs to stay open on Tuesday despite being a public holiday. “Our office will remain open on Dussehra, as several buyers prefer to register new vehicles or seek delivery on this auspicious day,” said an officer from the Andheri RTO .
