MUMBAI: A woman killed her 6-year-old daughter and committed suicide in Charkop, Kandivli (West) on Sunday. The deceased were identified as Prerana Katakdaund and her daughter Amrita.

Their bodies were discovered around 4pm by Prerana’s sister-in-law during her visit to their residence.
According to officers from Charkop police station, the 28-year-old woman resided with her husband and their daughter in a Maharashtra Housing and Area development Authority (MHADA) building in Charkop. The family has been residing in the building for the past two years.
Police officers said Prerana allegedly strangled Amrita before hanging herself from the ceiling. However, officers said no visible injury marks were found on the child.
Cops said investigation revealed that Prerana took the extreme step owing to mounting financial woes at home.
Her husband Sudhir, a government employee, earns a nominal salary, the police said, adding that his insufficient income could have been the primary reason for the murder-suicide.
They added that the neighbours expressed shock at Prerana’s decision and said that the couple rarely fought, thus ruling out the possibility of a domestic dispute.
A case of was registered at the Charkop police station under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the bodies were despatched for postmortem, following which bodies they will be handed over to the Katakdaunds .
