MUMBAI: The police have begun an inquiry into the alleged assault of two students from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) by an officer from Govandi police station while investigating a theft at the hostel on Sunday.

Student Mohammed Sadique, 23, alleged that sub-inspector Shankar Surve abused and slapped him and another student after he came late to file a complaint about his stolen mobile phone. Surve accused Sadique of trying to shield another student in his statement.

The students union has demanded that the police officer be suspended or transferred.

“An inquiry will be done in this regard,” said Shahaji Umap, deputy commissioner of police, zone 6.

The police will depute an officer to unearth the facts and ascertain the exact sequence of events. Two laptops and a mobile phone were stolen from a room at the hostel, which was shared by five students.

The police, who suspected the involvement of Sadique and another student, allegedly roughed them up and took Sadique to the lock-up, where he was allegedly beaten up and kept for five-and-a-half hours until other students intervened. The police have denied the charge.
