MUMBAI: The magistrate court on Friday remanded the Kerala-based preacher, Mohammed Haneef, to judicial custody after the crime branch did not seek extension of his police custody.

Haneef, booked for indoctrinating and recruiting Kerala-based youngsters, was arrested on August 13 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), based on the complaint filed by 60-year-old Abdul Majeed Kadar Khan, father of one of the radicalised youths.

After Haneef was produced in the court on Friday afternoon, the crime branch informed the magistrate that it no longer needed its custody and that he could be remanded in judicial custody.

Haneef’s lawyer Premlal Krishnan also agreed to judicial custody for his client . He, however, alleged that they were yet to receive a copy of the complaint filed by Khan based on which Haneef was arrested .

The court took cognisance of the complaint and Krishnan submitted an application in the court once again requesting a copy of the complaint.

Meanwhile, the crime branch is likely to take the custody of other two accused — Arshi Qureshi and Rizwan Khan — from Kerala police after it obtained production warrants for the duo from the magistrate court earlier this week. In his complaint, Abdul had stated that Haneef, along with Qureshi and Khan, were responsible for his son Ashfaque getting radicalised and joining the ISIS along with at least 21 other Muslim youths from Kerala.
