MUMBAI: Two months after the rescue of a female jackal from Aarey Colony, veterinarians at SGNP on Monday said that she was fit to be released into the wild. The location for the release was not disclosed.

The jackal was found near Khadak Pada pump house, close to a picnic spot at Aarey Colony, Goregaon, on August 1. The animal was taken to Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) for treatment where it was diagnosed with eczema — a condition that causes scaly and red patches on the skin. “After basic treatment through antibiotics, her wounds were dressed properly. We gave her vitamin supplements and then animal showed good results and is now healthy,” said Dr Shailesh Pethe, veterinarian, SGNP adding that the jackal weighed 4 kg when it was rescued but after treatment its weight doubled. “The animal has been feeding on chicken and beef.”

Forest officials said that they will be releasing the animal over the next couple of days. “We thank the SGNP team for the jackal’s recovery as such animals are rare,” said Omkar Rane, member of a trust that rescued the animal.
