MUMBAI:In a first, the Maharashtra government has decided to grant special leave to government employees who are mothers of children with a physical or mental disability or employees who father special children single-handedly. The state will grant a maximum of 730 days, amounting to two years, to government employees with mentally or physically challenged children in their entire duration of service. The decision is based on recommendations of a state coordination committee under the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act. The Bombay HC had asked the committee to formulate a policy for leave to women employees with special children while hearing a petition. “Employees will be able to avail of the special child care leave only for two children till they turn 22,” an employee from the finance dept said.
