MUMBAI: Speaking on behalf of the government, Dr Shubhangi Parkar, head of the psychiatry department, KEM Hospital, and chief of the helpline for mental health issues, answered what the government has been doing to address the problem of suicides in Mumbai. Parkar, who has done a PHD in suicide prevention, has been working with the government for two decades.

Q. What is the government doing to curb suicides?
A. We have a helpline number – 022 24131212 – where two women take calls round-theclock for people who need counselling, including those who feel suicidal. These are women who are qualified and passionate to do this work. We never ask for the caller’s identity. If we feel they require more help, we recommend them to the closest government health centre. Many call back for follow ups.
Q.How many calls are received ?
A. About 150 to 200 phone calls in a week. Mostly women reach out for help. Men need to open up as the suicide rate in men is high. Also, many commit suicide owing to addiction, hence their judgment to seek help is poor.
Q. What measures do we take to curb suicides?
A. Today, stress levels are high in youngsters. Our representatives go to schools and colleges, where lectures are organised for parents, guardians, teachers. We tell them how suicidal tendencies need to be identified and the things to watch out for. This includes dealing with stress and depression.
