MUMBAI: The Indian Navy unveiled their second guided missile destroyer Mormugao under the Project 15B on Saturday. The ship is a part of the four indigenous warships to be made in the Mazagaon docks.

The 2844-tonne vessel was launched in the presence of Indian Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba. His wife, Reena, President of the Navy Wives Welfare Association broke a coconut on the ship’s bow for the inaugural ceremony.
With cutting-edge advanced technology and equipped with a state-of-the-art weapons system and sensors, the destroyer ship’s specialised features include improved survivability, sea-keeping, stealth and ship maneuvering.
Mormugao was designed by the Directorate of Naval Design (DND). A vertically-launched missile system enables long-distance engagement of shore, sea-based and air targets. The use of radar-transparent deck fittings make it difficult to spot the ship. Mormugao will be equipped to carry and operate two multiple-role helicopters.
“This event is yet another moment of truth for the navy and India’s quest for self-reliance and indigenisation. We are proud that all our warships and submarines on order today being constructed within the country,” said Lanba.
He added that with this ship, the DND has helped the navy to achieve its dream of transforming from a “buyers” to a “builders” navy.
