MUMBAI: The Five Garden area near Parsi Gymkhana in Dadar was flooded on Wednesday after a major water supply pipeline burst. Residents in some parts of Dadar (East) did not get their supply of water in the morning.

According to the disaster management unit, the 48-inch new Tansa main water pipeline burst around 6am, which resulted in the loss of thousands of litres of drinking water. The Tansa main pipeline supplies water to F-north (Sion, Matunga) and F-south (Shivadi, Parel, Dadar) areas. The bursting of the pipe led to major flooding in the area and also a crater on the cement concrete road where it burst. The water department has started repairing the pipeline and plans to complete it before Thursday morning, said civic officials. South-bound traffic on BA Road has been diverted to Five Garden because of the flooding and the ongoing repair work. Civic officials said the municipal staff is trying to restore the damaged pipeline in 12 hours. This is the third time a pipe-burst has been reported on the century-old Tansa pipeline at a similar spot.

A senior civic official from the water department said, “We are confident of completing the repairs by Thursday morning, so water cuts will not be imposed.” Local activist Nikhil Desai, however, said, “This is the same spot where the pipeline burst a few years ago. The civic body should replace old pipelines .” The chief hydraulic engineer, AS Tawadia, was not available for comment.
