Sister says ISIS man wanted to return

MUMBAI: Ayaz Sultan, who left India in October last year and is believed to have joined the ISIS, wanted to return home and had even asked his sister for money to come back. Sultan assured his sister he would be back by January 2016, but never returned.

The charge sheet filed by NIA against Ayaz for instigating young men in Malwani includes statements from his mother and sisters. The statements show Ayaz was in touch with his sister till January this year.

In a statement given to the ATS, Ayaz’s sister Shayna Shaikh has said after he left from India, he was in touch with their elder sister Nurjahan. Shaikh said around November - December, Ayaz asked Nurjahan to make an arrangement of Rs1 lakh and also promised he would return only after things cooled down.

Nurjahan said when Ayaz left from home, he misguided her and said he was still in Pune. It was only by the first week of November that he revealed he was in Iraq. Nurjahan said on November 28 last year, Ayaz contacted her again and asked for money.

She said after November, they had regular conversations on a popular mobile messenger app where they exchanged all details. Nurjahan said Ayaz would always ask about the money and updates on news channels . Nurjahan has said Ayaz was undergoing physical training. The statement said on December 27, Ayaz called through a popular mobile messenger app and spoke to her for 45 minutes. Nurjahan said Ayaz again asked for money and said he wanted it to cross the border. At this time Ayaz had told Nurjahan he was in Kashmir .

Finally on January 1, Ayaz had messaged his sister saying he was on the path of Allah and would directly meet in Heaven. Nurjahan has said they had tried to convince Ayaz to return A few days later on January 13, Ayaz asked if matters had cooled in India and said that he was in Syria. After this conversation, he went off the grid.
