MUMBAI The lure to earn in foreign currency came undone for a youth from Uttar Pradesh who was forced to work as a shepherd in Saudi Arabia against the false promise of an operator’s job.

He had worked in Saudi Arabia from May till September, the police said.

According to the police, the victim, in his early 30s, had arrived in the city to visit his relatives in Nagpada in May.

Later, he saw a newspaper advertisement about a job in Saudi Arabia. He approached the company and paid Rs80,000 as the fees for offering him a new job.

An officer from Nagpada police station requesting anonymity said, “The youth was excited that he got a new job abroad. He declared it on social networking websites and informed all the relatives. Having been conned by cheats, the youth went through the embarrassing situation.”

The officer added, “The company initially offered him the job of an operator in Saudi Arabia and all the procedure was completed in within a month. The youth left the city on June 7 and started working as a shepherd and when he contacted the firm based in Nagpada, they claimed that he would be given operator’s role shortly.”

The victim then kept working as a shepherd for a month. And then in order to meet his expenses, the victim didn’t complain and worked till September 6, the date he returned to Mumbai.

“The victim was forced to work as a shepherd, and then later in order to finance his own expenses he worked there for a couple of months. After coming back to the city, he registered a case against the company,” said an officer.

The case under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) has been registered with the Nagpada police station and police officials are investigating whether the company ran a racket to dupe youth.
