US foundation’s road survey to guide civic body on safety

MUMBAI:A New York-based foundation, which has chosen Mumbai as one of the 20 cities globally to guide them on road safety measures, will conduct its first survey on Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Road from Gandhi Nagar junction to Vikhroli station.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will implement the LBS Road widening and improvement project based on suggestions provided free of cost by the foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies.

After LBS road, the organisation will also survey other arterial roads in the city and submit their findings to the BMC to improve their condition.

The organisation has been coordinating with various stakeholders in the city— the BMC, regional transport office (RTO), Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) and traffic police — over road safety as per international standards. To discuss the action plan, various stakeholders will participate in a workshop on Tuesday.

The foundation will compile a data of accident-prone spots and will submit its findings on how to mitigate mishaps.

The civic body is also likely to incorporate foundation’s inputs on road designs — a technical engineering aspect that will help build better quality roads.

The enforcement agencies such as the traffic police and RTO will also be roped in to provide data and adopt suggestions. Imparting mass media awareness ideas to the stakeholders will also be looked at seriously by this foundation.

“The foundation will study traffic pattern and will recommend various improvements related to footpath, traffic signal and awareness drive about helmet and seat-belt among citizens. The coordination between various stakeholders will be key,” a BMC official said.
