MUMBAI: After five days of heavy rains, the city recorded negligible rainfall on Friday morning. Weathermen said some of the factors responsible for heavy rain along the Konkan coast, including Mumbai, had died down, but the possibility of heavy rain over the weekend cannot be ruled out.

“There is a well-marked low pressure area over coastal Andhra Pradesh and surrounding areas that is drawing moisture along the Konkan areas and interiors. Mumbai could expect heavy to very heavy rain over the next 48 hours from Friday,” said Shubhangi Bhute, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Bhute said an upper air cyclonic circulation over Saurashtra and Gujarat, which was one of the main factors for heavy rain over Mumbai, has died down.
Between 8.30am on Thursday and 8.30 pm on Friday, the weather station at Santacruz recorded 39.7mm, while Colaba recorded 45.2mm of rain.
Meanwhile, the state disaster management authority’s weather bulletin predicted intermittent showers with a few heavy spells. “Spells of heavy to very heavy rain are likely in Raigad , Ratnagiri districts and south-central Maharashtra districts. Fairly wide spread rainfall is expected across the whole state with a few heavy spells at isolated places during the next 72 hours from Friday morning,” said RV Sharma, consultant (natural disaster), state disaster management unit.
