After the controversy broke out, 10 members of Adarsh cooperative housing society in Colaba, including relatives of former chief minister Ashok Chavan, resigned from its membership.
And, significantly, two of them — Admiral Madhavendra Singh and General RK Hooda — had a change of heart and later withdrew their resignations. This was disclosed on Wednesday by RC Thakur, who was the chief promoter of the society, while he was deposing before the two-member commission constituted to probe irregularities in the building.
Those who resigned included former army chiefs General (Retd) NC Vij and General (Retd) Deepak Kapoor and Chavan’s relatives Seema Sharma, Madanlal Sharma and late Bhagwati Sharma.
When asked about the resignations of Chavan’s relatives, Thakur said he was informed of the death of Chavan’s mother-in-law Bhagwati Sharma by her son Vinod. “The managing committee had decided to accept the resignation of Bhagwati Sharma after learning she had passed away,” said Thakur. “The resignations given by Madanlal Sharma and Seema Sharma were accepted by the society,” he added. He, however, said that none of the resignations have been forwarded to the Collector yet.
The Adarsh building has 104 apartments, of which 102 have been allotted. There are 26 flats admeasuring 1,076 square feet, and the remaining are of 650 square feet.
After the Adarsh scam came to light in October 2010, Chavan, the then chief minister, had announced that all his relatives had resigned from the membership of the Adarsh society. Chavan had to resign from his post over the Adarsh issue.
The Adarsh scam made headlines when it was allegedly found that politicians, bureaucrats and army officials came together to grab apartments in the 31-storeyed building at Colaba.
