The incident took place around 3pm.

The police said, Mohammed Mumtaz Ali, his younger brother Gulzar (11) and two neighbours Shanbagh Abdul Ali (11) and Mubarak Mehbub Ali Shaikh (12) left their homes in Adarsh Nagar, Chembur on Sunday morning.

The boys told their parents they were going to Haji Ali and Juhu beach.

The boys reached Juhu beach around 12.30pm.

The police said after spending a few hours on the beach, the boys decided to go for a swim.

Ali entered the water and slowly ventured deep into the sea.

Soon, his brother and friends heard him shout for help. They called out to lifeguards patrolling the beach for help.

The lifeguards rushed into the water and pulled Ali out.

He was taken to Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle but was declared dead on arrival.

“We have registered a case of accidental death,” senior police inspector Madhukar Chaudhari, from Santacruz police station, said.

Chaudhari said Ali’s family has been informed about the incident.
