Imran Barniwala, along with a car mechanic, was driving a Honda City near the Navroji Hill area.

“At 2.30pm, he entered a vegetable market in the area through a no-entry lane. Losing control over the vehicle, he knocked down several vegetable vendors and buyers,” said S Desai, assistant inspector, Dongri police station.

After the accident, Barniwala fled from the spot. The locals rushed the seven injured to the JJ hospital. “The victims sustained minor injuries and were discharged after being given first aid,” said Desai.

Meanwhile, two policemen chased the 18-year-old and arrested him on charges of rash driving, causing hurt and not fulfilling his duty as a driver by taking those injured to the hospital.

The police did not find a driving licence on Barniwala.

He apparently told the police that he is a Class 10 student and was taking a trial run of the car when the incident occurred. Barniwala’s father is a hawker. The police will conduct a medical test to ascertain whether Barniwala was drunk at the time of the incident.
