The crime branch sleuths arrested two alleged sharp shooters belonging to underworld don Guru Satam’s gang, for threatening and trying to extort money from a Borivli-based builder.
The two arrested men have been identified as Bhola Kanojia (31) and Shaukat Shakil(36). The crime branch unit XI arrested the duo on Sunday from a hotel located in Borivli(west).
According to the crime branch officials, the two men were trying to extort Rs 1 crore from a local builder and had been threatening him with dire consequences if he refused to pay.
On May 10, the two men had gone to the construction site of the builder, and threatened the workers and asked them to call Satam if they wanted to continue with the work.
A month later, on June 4, they called the builder again from an unknown number. They asked the builder to pay the demanded amount or he would be killed.
Following this, the builder approached the police and lodged a complaint.
When the builder received another extortion call on June 17, he asked the caller to meet him and collect the ransom amount.
After some bargaining, the amount was brought down to Rs 5 lakh and they decided to meet on Sunday in a Borivli hotel.
Acting on this information, the crime branch official laid a trap and arrested the two men. “They have been arrested on charges of extortion and criminal intimidation and have been remanded to police custody till July 20,” said a crime branch official.
