There are at least 226 trees around the city that are in danger of falling at any moment, the survey of dangerous trees conducted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has found.

The survey was conducted over the past week by junior tree officers in every ward. Tree experts, however, feel the figure is not a reflection of reality. “The numbers in the report are far from the truth. A similar survey by a non-government organisation or some experts will throw up a much higher figure,” said Niranjan Shetty, member of the civic tree authority.

The report comes after a committee of experts was chosen to suggest policy changes to maintain the city’s trees after last month’s tree-falling mishap at Nariman Point.
