Of the 3,035 children up to 14 years of age who committed suicide in India last year, 283 did so because of failure in exams, shows data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau.

The only other reason that led to more suicides was family problems, which led to 344 suicides. Illness accounted for 262 suicides, while love affairs accounted for 215.

“Most students can take such failure in their stride. It’s some who find it difficult to cope,” said Dr Nilesh Shah, HOD, psychiatry, Sion hospital.

Shah said the need is to identify and treat such children, who suffer from depression or a psychiatric disorder that makes them vulnerable to failure in exams or relationship.

Kavita Sharma, a counselling psychologist with Vandrevala Foundation’s 24-hour helpline for students and parents, said: “A child’ mental health is important, especially before and after exams. Students need to be relaxed. Participating in extra-curricular activities would help.”
