The deceased were identified as Sujata Patil, 19, Ashish Chavan, 20, and Niranjan Shinge, 20. The Gorai police said the group did not pay heed to notice boards put up at the spot warning picnickers to avoid venturing too far into the sea.

There were five girls and eight boys in the group, all commerce students of GSS College in Majiwada, Thane. They arrived at the beach at around 9am in two cars. After parking the cars near the beach, they entered the sea when the tide was low. At around 11.30am, when the tide began to come in, they found it tough to keep afloat.
