According to the police, the Hyundai Accent hit a Tavera, heading towards Pune, from the rear.

“As a result of the collision, the driver of the Tavera lost control over the vehicle. The vehicle toppled over thrice before coming to a halt,” said S Mane, sub-inspector, Wadgaon traffic aid post.

The injured passengers were taken to Lokmanya hospital in Pune. While three of them were declared dead on arrival, eight others are undergoing treatment.

Anil Tambe, 48, a resident of Khadki in Pune, is one of the deceased. He was identified with the help of the identity card found in his pocket.

The driver of the car has been arrested on charges of rash driving. “We will record the victims’ statements once they are in a position to talk,” said an officer from Wadgaon-Maval police.
