The three were allegedly under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place at around 1.20 am on the Vikhroli stretch of the LBS Marg.

An officer said the BEST bus was headed to the Vikhroli Depot for CNG filling when the incident took place.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VII) S. Shintre said, “We suspect the three youngsters, who were headed to their Ghatkopar homes, were under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place. We will have to verify that.”

Police said Karbhari Digambar (33), who was driving in a rash and negligent manner, rammed the bus into the bike. Shailesh Salve (23), Sandesh Vasant Mandarikar (21) and Hasmukh Vora (26) were flung off their Bajaj CD 100 bike and fell unconscious.

Inspector Sunil Bhosle said, “Digambar fled fearing mob lynching. The three victims were rushed to the Sion hospital.”

Shintre said the victims are said to be out of danger and will be soon be discharged.

Digambar was later arrested by the Parksite police under section 279 (rash and negligent driving), 338 (causing grievous hurt) and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

No case has been registered against the three youngsters for riding together on a bike yet because they are recuperating in the hospital.

The police could not conduct medical tests to ascertain if they were under the influence of alcohol because they were being treated for the injuries.
