The victim, Usha Srinivasan, lived in the flat with her husband, Srinivasan Subramaniam.

The couple’s son is pursuing a management degree at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

Fifty-six-year-old Srinivasan, who works for LRC company in the Navi Mumbai MIDC, was away at work when the murder took place.

Police said the incident occurred at 5.30 pm. “Usha’s head, face and throat had cuts and stab wounds,” deputy commissioner of police, Ashok Dudhe, said. “The killer had attacked her with a sharp object seven to eight times.”

The motive, police say, is unclear. “The gold ornaments in the house are all intact. There is nothing missing,” Dudhe said. The police suspect the victim knew the killer. “The [murderer’s] entry is by door and it does not seem to be a forced one,” Dudhe said. “It seems to be the work of someone known to the lady. Probably a friend or a relative.”

The police are interrogating the two security guards of the building to get details of visitors, who had entered the building on Monday evening.

Rapidly developing Navi Mumbai is home to several upper middle class professionals, many of who have migrated to Mumbai for work. The city has seen at least two such sensational murders this year.

In August, Dipan Banerjee, an engineer with Larsen & Toubro was found stabbed to death in the bathroom of his rented apartment at Airoli. The 25-year-old Howrah resident was stabbed in his Sylvia building flat in sector 8. His mobile phone and camera were missing. A few days later, the police arrested three people, including Banerjee’s dabbawalla, for the murder. The trio, which the police said was a group of amateur robbers, was traced to Pune.

In April, 36-year-old civic employee, Arti Kaluse, was found killed in her Millennium Towers apartment. The police alleged Arti’s brother-in-law, Ramrao, killed her over a property dispute. Ramrao allegedly committed suicide after killing Arti.
