52-yr-old Mumbai cop in critical condition after speeding SUV runs him over

A 52-year-old constable attached to Deonar police station is in critical condition after a speeding SUV ran over him in Govandi on Friday morning. The police have seized the Scorpio and arrested the driver.
According to the Deonar police, constable Nandkumar Thakur along with another policeman were walking towards the police station near Mhada Colony at around 9.20am when the incident occurred. A Scorpio hit Thakur and ran over him.
Thakur was on his night shift and was returning to the police station after his duty. “Shaikh’s SUV was parked when the constables were passing by. Shaikh took out the vehicle in a hurry, hitting the constable . Further investigations are underway,” said Rajendra Sanap, assistant inspector at Deonar police station.
The accompanying policeman then rushed Thakur to Joy Hospital in Chembur. The police said that Thakur is still in critical condition having sustained head and chest injuries.
The accused was later identified as Chandbabu Shaikh and handed over to the Deonar police. Shaikh has been booked under sections 279 (for rash driving) and 338 (for causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
The police have also seized Shaikh’s Scorpio following his arrest.
