Police said Amol Landge, 28, was a Sangli native and was in a relationship with a woman police constable who lives at the Ghatkopar police quarters.

However, Landge’s parents had got him married with another woman. “Landge became depressed because his parents had got him married against his wishes,” said Rajkumar Kothmire, police inspector, Ghatkopar police station.

Landge came to his girlfriend’s residence on Friday. Around 4.30pm, he went to the bathroom and hanged himself from a pipe, police said. When he did not come out for a while, the woman broke down the door only to see him hanging. Landge was taken to Rajawadi Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Investigations revealed that Landge used to frequently visit his lover’s residence for the past two months.

Police said Landge took the extreme step as he was unable to marry the woman constable. “Landge had not been reporting to work and had developed a drinking habit,” Kothmire said. No suicide note was found. The police have registered a case of accidental death in this regard.

Police have recorded the statement of the woman constable.
