Former chief minister Ashok Chavan on Friday criticised Pawar for “breaking” Munde’s family. In a veiled attack, he accused Pawar of weaning away the BJP leader’s elder brother and nephew.

Munde’s brother Panditrao was inducted into NCP by Pawar on Thursday.

“It is not appropriate to break someone’s family,” Chavan said at an election rally, without naming Pawar.

“It is understandable that political parties try to score over each other during election time, but that does not mean one should engineer a split in a politician’s family,” he said.

Sources said that Pawar’s open admission, that he would love to be chief minister of the state, has not gone down well in the Congress, which considers itself the big brother in the ruling Congress-NCP alliance in the state.
