“Your motive, it seems, was to help the accused,” said Justice Bilal Nazki on Thursday. The court directed the CID to complete the probe in three months.

Shamim Modi, the TISS professor, was attacked by a watchman near her residence in Vasai on July 23. Her throat was half-slit and she required over 180 stitches.

Additional public prosecutor Ajey Gadkari told the court that they had interrogated the main accused Jangbahadur Singh. Before the police could arrest him he fled to Nepal, said Gadkari.

He said they have arrested his brother Dhanraj Singh, also an accused, and he is in judicial custody. “You allowed him (accused) to go away to Nepal, who knows if he has fled away to Nepal or is still somewhere in Mumbai?” said Justice Nazki.
