According to the police, constable Anil Aytodekar had fined autorickshaw driver, Mahindra Kewat, for flouting traffic rules near the Vasai ST stand at 7.30pm.

Irked by the policeman, Kewat went from the spot and returned an hour later with a can of petrol. He threw the petrol on Aytodekar and set him on fire.

Aytodekar was taken to Golden Park Hospital in Vasai and has suffered 50% burns. He is said to be critical.

N Konde, sub-inspector, Manickpur police station, said Kewat fled from the spot and is still absconding. “We haven’t recorded the statement of the victim as he is undergoing treatment. Aytodekar is in no position to talk and hence are waiting for him to stabilise,” said Konde.

A case under Indian Penal Code section 307 (attempt to murder) has been registered against Kewat.

Originally from Uttar Pradesh, Kewat has been driving an auto in the area since the past two years.
