Eighty-two year old Kaldate died at a hospital after a prolonged illness.

A member of Rashtra Seva Dal—a socialist outfit for youths—Kaldate participated in India’s freedom struggle, the Goa liberation movement and was also imprisoned during the Emergency. He was elected to Maharashtra Assembly and later Parliament and also worked as general secretary of Janata Dal.

"In his demise, we have lost an excellent parliamentarian and sincere activist,"said chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.

Kaldate is survived by wife and two daughters.
