While the BMC claims to have completed more than 90% of the nullah desilting work, our audit, conducted on June 2, a day after its May 31 deadline, found that only 50% of the work was done.

Annually, the BMC spends Rs1,325 crore on storm water drains and Rs924 crore on road repairs, much of which is spent before the rains. Multiple agencies working on projects across the city are partly responsible for the mess. “Desilting nullahs is not enough. We need a broader approach,” said Prakash Sanglikar, panelist and former deputy civic commissioner.
