‘BMC officials asked us to buy water tankers’

“I have been visiting the BMC office every alternate day to complain, but no action has been taken yet. Instead, the officials advised us to buy water tankers for our society. It is appalling!” said Nair.

Nair dreads the serious health problems that the residents may have to face if the supply of contaminated water continues.

Tired of waiting for a reply from civic officials, the residents have started using mineral water for their daily needs.

“The water we get cannot be used for any household chores. I have two kids, one is six months old and the other is three years old; I boil mineral water and use it to bathe them. The civic body cannot continue to be indifferent like this,” said N Cyril, a Sai Park resident.

The building consists of 11 flats, which are facing acute water shortage and water contamination.

“The water smells horrendous, we are getting drainage water. It raises such a stink that it is even difficult to use it to bathe. A lot of residents are falling ill after consuming this water,” said Gladys Leon, 50, another resident of Sai Park.

Irked with the non-compliance of civic officials, Gladys asked: “Is it not the BMC’s responsibility to provide us with fresh water? It has been more than two weeks since we complained, still the problem persists.”

Despite repeated attempts, assistant municipal commissioner RW Pawar was not available for comment and did not respond to text messages form HT.
