BMC tries its luck with six new cold-mix technologies

In a bid to reduce potholes and improve road conditions, especially during the monsoon, the civic body has decided to expand the use of the cold-mix technology that is used for filling potholes.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started conducting trials of six new cold- mix technologies, performance reports of which are expected to be out in a month. These technologies include Insta patch, Dura patch, Divya, Endura Fix, Tiketar and Jet patch.
These technologies, if proved effective, will be used for pothole repair from the next monsoon in addition to the two existing cold-mix technologies -Wonder patch and Road Bond.
Work orders for conducting trails were issued to technology suppliers a few days ago. Civic officials said that the viability and performance of these technologies would undergo a thorough test before they could be shortlisted for use.
"After the sample materials of these technologies are tested in municipal labs, their performance reports will be submitted to the Standing Technical Advisory Committee - the state-appointed expert panel for roads - for further scrutiny," said a senior official from the civic roads department.
However, there was also scepticism about the new technologies and suppliers, some of whom, officials said, had joined the bandwagon only because the civic body decided to use cold-mix technology from this year.
"The testing is still in its initial stages. Some of these technologies could be struck off as they might not even meet our requirements. Therefore, not all technologies may be shortlisted for use," said the official.
Despite introducing the use of new cold-mix technology this year, the BMC received a lot of flak as potholes continued to persist.
In June, the civic body also abandoned the use of Patchmaker - one of the three cold-mix technologies - after it was found to be ineffective.
