On hearing about the incident, Devashi’s elder brother Rajaram, 38, came to the hospital and identified his body, the police said. He told the police that Devashi had not come home after work on Wednesday. Worried about his well-being, Rajaram and his friends had enquired with several police stations and hospitals. He was then informed about the body discovered at the beach.

“The doctors at Cooper have told us that Devashi died due to drowning. However, a post-mortem will reveal the exact cause of death. We do not suspect any foul play. We have registered a case of accidental death,” said Madhukar Chaudhari, senior inspector, Santacruz police station.
