Bride’s family in Ghatkopar anxious

Even 15 hours after news of the expressway tragedy reached Ambedkar Nagar colony no.1 in Ghatkopar — the maternal home of the bride, Manisha Gaikwad — there was confusion about the fate of those who had travelled with the wedding party.

While a majority of those who died in the accident are from the groom’s family, which hails from Pune, the maternal home of one of the victims, Poornima Manjre, 25, was Ambedkar Nagar. She had moved to Pune after marriage. While Poornima’s death has been confirmed, neighbours are unsure whether her husband, Shalu, is dead or alive.

Sopan Kokate, 67, the grandfather of the bride, said he was not sure who among those who attended the wedding is alive. “Many of the injured were taken to hospitals in Pune. My family rushed there after we learnt of the accident. While we know the identities of some of the dead, details regarding many others is sketchy,” he said. So many have died, it will take time to figure it out.”

The bride’s family is also very worried. “I hope Manisha does not have to bear the brunt of the mishap,” said a relative.
