'Bus-tracking system by best needs publicity'

The bus tracking system introduced by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking seems to have gone largely unnoticed.
Commuters say not many are aware of the system, as it has not been given enough publicity. "While the move is a good one, it is of little use if commuters do not know about it. The undertaking should have popularised the service by announcing it on the rolling ticker in AC buses," said Shirish Deshpande, chairperson of the Mumbai Grahak Panchayat.
BEST launched the passenger information system on August 7. It helps passengers access information such as the location and estimated arrival time of a bus by sending an SMS to 56060 or accessing www.bestpis.in.
The Mumbai Grahak Panchayat will be soon write to the undertaking asking them to create more awareness about the service, which is operational for all 270 air-conditioned BEST buses.
BEST committee members also expressed concerns about whether the service was truly commuter-friendly. "If the administration does not want passengers to benefit from the service, why introduce it in the first place? Why is it not widely popularised?," said Kedar Hombalkar, a BEST committee member.
When contacted, Manoj Varade, assistant public relations officer, BEST, said, "We are working on ways to popularise the SMS service. Soon, details of the system will be displayed on tickers in AC buses."
