The accused identified as Firoz Ali Jafri, who is of Balochi descent, kept changing his modus operandi jewellery and stole valuables worth Rs 1.14 lakh in the past few months. He would pose as a police officer or a customer to dupe people, police said. On November 28, Jafri went to Lalbaug Art, a jewellery store in Kalachowkie area, on the pretext of purchasing jewellery for his wife.

“Jafri told the salesman to show him some silver rings. He somehow managed to divert the salesman’s attention and slipped rings worth Rs 15,000 in his pocket and left ,” said B Shendge, sub-inspector, Kalachowkie police station. The employer, on realising this lodged a complaint.

The police arrested Jafri on December 6. They learnt that Jafri was involved in six other cases and had stolen around Rs 1.14 lakh.
