Contractor will compensate kin of woman who fell into pit: BMC

After 60-year-old Marriam Naidu died after falling into a pit dug by civic contractors to replace underground storm water drain on in Wadala, the civic body said the contractor will compensate the victim’s family and not the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The incident occurred early morning on January 5 when the victim had gone to buy milk and accidentally fell in the open pit.

The contractors had begun work a month ago but the pit was not barricaded, hence keeping the pit open and dangerous.

The contractor, MCR Consortium has been slapped with a fine of Rs 50,000 and given a show cause notice of 7 days.

“The norms said the contractor, though assigned by the BMC, will have to compensate the family,” said Laxman Vhatkar, chief engineer, water storm drain department.

While talking about the alleged reports of the victim’s family refusing the compensation given to them, he said, “We are not aware about the family refusing any compensation.”
