The Kalyan police’s crime unit, on Friday, arrested a 30-year-old man on charges of cheating and rape after he allegedly conned three women into marriage by pretending to be a police constable.

The police seized a fake revolver and identity card and a motorcycle with a bogus number plate from the accused. Bharat Nimbalkar, police inspector, crime unit said, “We received a tip-off that a man known as Mahesh Aaglaave had been introducing himself as a constable by showing his revolver to people. When our team had confirmed that Aaglaave is not in the police force, they arrested him. During interrogation, he confessed to cheating three women.”
Police said Aaglaave told them that he had presented himself as a police constable to the women and their families when he went to ask for their daughters’ hand in marriage. One of the victims, the daughter of a police constable, has now lodged a complaint against Aaglaave.
The police have filed a case against Aaglaave under sections 170 (personating a public servant), 420 (cheating), 376 (rape), 506 (threatening and harassment) and 34 (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. He has been remanded in police custody till October 12.
