Based on his friend’s version, the family of Sachin Khopkar, 25, — whose body was found in Bharat Nagar, Chembur, on Friday — claim that he was beaten to death by two police constables. The RCF police, however, allege that as they found the body on a pavement in Chembur, they sent it to Rajawadi hospital.

A friend of the deceased said, “Around 12.30am, four of us including Khopkar, were waiting for a friend near Tata Power Colony in Chembur. Two police constables from the RCF police station on patrolling duty started hurling expletives at us. Fearing that they might thrash us, we fled. But Khopkar got left behind. The last thing that I saw was that the police slapped him.”

The police claim that they found the body on a pavement and rushed Khopkar to Rajawadi hospital where he was declared dead on admission. “The allegations of the deceased’s family will be looked into,” said Rajkumar Vhatkar, DCP (operations), Mumbai police, authorised to speak to the media.
