A 32-year-old dance instructor, a resident of Marol, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly creating two fake Facebook profiles, and using them to sexually harass, stalk and defame his former woman colleague.
According to the police, the accused used one of the profiles to give false information about the woman to her fiancé. He sent messages to the fiancé, saying the complainant was having an affair with him. He used the other profile to send pornographic material to the woman.
The police said the accused took the step as he was angry that the woman and some others made fun of him because he did not have a girlfriend.
The accused told the police he does not recollect when he made those fake profiles. After his arrest, the man told the police he had sent pornographic material to other women too.
The complainant, meanwhile, had no idea the dance instructor was behind the crime. When she approached the cyber police station at BKC on January 22, she had registered an FIR against an unknown accused. The accused does not have a prior criminal record. The fake profiles were blocked soon after the complaint was registered.
The FIR was registered by senior police inspector Kalpana Gadekar of the cyber police station under sections 354a (sexual harassment), 354d (stalking), 419(cheating by personation), 500 (defamation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insulting modesty) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.
Sub-inspector Sadhna Belgaonkar and her team traced and arrested the accused from his residence based on technical evidence. He used his personal computer and mobile phone to commit the crime.
