Kakkad was allegedly killed by multiple murder accused Vijay Palande, and Palande had told the police that he and his accomplices had dumped the body at Chiplun. A crime branch team on April 26 recovered Kakkad's decomposed body parts from the ghat.

Soon after the crime branch confirmed that the torso found at the ghat matched with Kakkad's DNA, his family on June 11 moved an application before a metropolitan magistrate court, seeking custody of Kakkad's body to perform his last rites. However, the application is yet to be decided on.

"Our application is still pending as the body parts recovered by the crime branch are with the forensic laboratory for further examination," said Hanish Kakkad, brother of the deceased.

However, the body can be handed to them only after the laboratory files its report.
