Thirty-year-old South Mumbai businessman Sushil Kothari was made to retrace the steps he had taken on the night his Honda Accord hit a scooter killing the pillion and injuring the rider early on Wednesday morning.
The Marine Drive police on Friday, to reconstruct the events leading to the accident, took Kothari to places he had visited hours before the accident, the place where he had consumed alcohol and to the spots where he had crashed his car into other parked vehicles.
The police first took Kothari to Hotel Continental’s eighth floor restaurant, Dome, where he had alcohol and dinner with relatives at 8.30pm on Tuesday.
The next stop was Hotel Trident Oberoi, where Kothari had gone later that night to drop some relatives. “We have recorded the statements of the staff, who saw Kothari consume alcohol and drive away after that,”
Senior Police Inspector Z. M. Gharal said.
The police then drove Kothari to the accident spot on Marine Drive and then to Malabar Hill where his car hit four parked cars. The police have also asked for footage from close circuit television camera installed in the hotels Kothari had visited. “The CCTV footage will help us establish the drink driving case,” said an officer.
Several individuals have been claiming that they were witnesses to the accident but they have not approached the police. “We have asked these people to come forward,” said an officer requesting anonymity.
