The body of a six-year-old girl was found in a drain in suburban Bhayander on Saturday morning.

The police suspect the girl was raped and murdered and are waiting for the post-mortem report for confirmation.

They have registered a first information report against unknown persons.

Assistant Police Inspector Sudhir Kudalkar of the Bhayander police station said the victim has been identified as a resident of Ganesh Diwan Nagar.

"Her family was informed after we found the body," Kudalkar added.

The girl's parents told the police that on Friday, at 9.30 pm, she went out to play. When she did not return till late night they got worried and lodged a missing person’s complaint.

The girl's body has been sent to Temba civic hospital for a post-mortem.
