'I'll never leave my child alone again'

Clad in a new pink dress that her father has bought, the three-and-a half-year-old girl who was raped late on Saturday ran about in the women's ward of Nair hospital on Tuesday. Puja Changoiwala reports.

All she knows of the brutality she was subjected to is that it hurts when she urinates.

"She is doing better now, but after the incident, she remained quiet and blank for a long time. I have not pressed her about what happened as I don't want her to have that memory," said her father as her mother sat silently on the child's hospital bed.

Only three months ago, the couple had organised a major celebration as they had a baby boy after three daughters. "We were all so happy. I started believing that the path ahead would only bring positive experiences, but fate had other plans. Seeing my daughter go through this is unbearable," the father said.

Breaking into tears, the mother hugged the girl. "I am never leaving you alone again."
