Jilted lover attacks bride at wedding

A jilted 25-year-old lover allegedly assaulted a bride at her wedding reception on Friday. Police said the accused Rahul Barwadekar, a Wadala resident, worked at a private company, and had propositioned Meghana Sawant (name changed), five years ago.

Police said the accused Rahul Barwadekar, a Wadala resident, worked at a private company, and had propositioned Meghana Sawant (name changed), five years ago.

Sawant had rejected him, and he had not taken it well.

Sources said since then, Barwadekar had harassed Sawant on a few occasions. “Her parents used to talk to him and warn him. For a few days, he would stop harassing her, then he’d start again,” said a relative, requesting anonymity.

“On Friday, she was at her wedding reception, on the stage and Barwadekar reached the spot,” said senior inspector Popat Tiwatane.

Barwadekar, after getting into the reception hall at Prabodhankar Thackeray Park, approached Sawant on the pretext of wishing her. On reaching the podium, he took a blunt object and attacked Sawant on her cheek. When he tried to escape, the guests caught him and handed him over to the police, who booked him for assault, and recovered a knife from him. Sawant was taken to KEM Hospital and discharged after treatment.
