The Mumbai crime branch suspects that it is the properties of actor Laila Khan’s mother Celina Patel that may have led to the alleged murder of the six family members.

The properties include a flat at Oshiwara, one at Mira road, a shop at Lokhandwala, and a farmhouse in Igatpuri. They are worth several crores, according to police officials.

The police also suspect that the family, while leaving Igatpuri for Jammu and Kashmir, was carrying nearly Rs. 40-50 lakh in cash and jewellery worth nearly Rs. 2 crore.

Officials said that according to their matrimonial records, Khan’s father Nadir Patel married Celina in 1979 and had four children, Azima, Laila, and twins Zara and Imran.

After the couple fell apart, Celina married Asif Sheikh, an accused in the case.

The police said that it was last year that Pervez Tak, Celina’s boyfriend, came to stay with the Khan family.

The family was last seen in Igatpuri with Tak, according to the complaint filed by Patel at the Oshiwara police station.

Sources also said that Khan does not have any Pakistani connection, as is being claimed.

Word of her being Pakistani was spread only for the sake of ‘publicity’ for her film Wafa, since the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena had objected to Pakistani actors working in Bollywood.
