Matunga station roofless for 7 days

According to the Western Railway, the height of the roofs had to be lifted by a few inches to accommodate the conversion of electricity supply to trains from the present Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC).

“The roofs have been removed because we need the clearance of the height for DC-AC conversion,” said Sharat Chandrayan, chief PRO, WR.

“The problem was occurring only at Matunga Road station and Elphinstone station and the roofs of no other station will be removed,” he added.

Trains that were running on 1500 volts DC will run on 25,000 volts AC by June, making trains faster and power saving. This project was undertaken by the WR around three years ago.

Chandrayan said the repair of damaged shades will also be done during this week. “The shades of the roofs were hindering the conversion,” he said.
