Mumbai:AIU seizes party drug worth Rs 7.5cr from knee guards

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs on Thursday arrested a South African national while she was trying to smuggle 15kg of party drug methaqualone, worth Rs7.5 crore to Lilongwe in Malawi.

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs on Thursday arrested a South African national while she was trying to smuggle 15kg of party drug methaqualone, worth Rs7.5 crore to Lilongwe in Malawi.

The drug was concealed in around 200 knee guards.

An AIU batch, headed by assistant commissioner of Customs Rishi Yadav, intercepted Sazani Memory Gama, 37, when she was boarding a Nairobi- bound Kenya Airways flight at around 3am at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

From Nairobi, she was to travel to Lilongwe.

AIU officials found around 200 knee guards in two of her suitcases.

When questioned, Gama s ai d s he was t aking t he knee guards to Lilongwe for trading purposes.

However, officials, who had specific information, opened t he knee guards to f i nd methaqualone concealed in each of them.

During questioning, Gama said she was unaware of the presence of the drug in the knee guards.

She told officials that she was given the bags in New Delhi.

Officials said Gama reached Delhi around three days back and after collecting the two suitcases containing t he drug, she flew to Mumbai on Wednesday.
