Mumbai ATS cop, 3 others held for cheating 60-year-old

The Meghwadi police on Friday arrested Dilip Bhosale, a sub-inspector in the ATS's Nagpada unit, and four other for allegedly duping Irani, an Andheri (East) of Rs 62 lakh. HT reports.

When Shettiyar Irani, 60, was told by his friend and then an officer from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and his that he could help him get a flat through the chief minister’s reservation quota scheme, the senior citizen had no idea that he was being conned.

The Meghwadi police on Friday arrested Dilip Bhosale, a sub-inspector in the ATS's Nagpada unit, and four other for allegedly duping Irani, an Andheri (East) of Rs 62 lakh.

According to the police, accused Ramesh Upadhyay, one of Irani's friend, had introduced him to another accused, Sanjay Mehta.

In January, Upadhyay told Irani that he could get him an apartment in Andheri (West) through the CM's 5% reservation quota, as his (Irani’s) son was physically challenged.

The duo then introduced Irani to Bhosale, who claimed to be a retired ATS official, and two others. Bhosale said he was currently the security in-charge of the CM, the police said.

“They convinced Irani to pay Rs10 lakh as the first installment and said he will get the allotment letter on January 28. On getting the letter, he paid Rs 25 lakh and then Rs 10 lakh,” said an officer from Meghwadi police station. In March, Bhosale asked Irani to send a Rs 17 lakh DD, following which he would get the property documents.

“Irani approached the collector's office last month, where he found that the documents were forged,” said the officer.

Irani approached the police on Friday following which Bhosale, Mehta, Upadhyay, along with Jagdeepsingh Atra and Anil Purohit were arrested.

“The ATS will be conducting a departmental inquiry and has suspended Bhosale. We are interrogating the accused,” said senior inspector Santosh Bhandare.
